55TH ARMY. An armed forces unit of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. Formed in late August 1941 on the Leningrad Front to defend enemy approaches to Leningrad from the south (in the regions of Pavlovsk, Kolpino, and the bank of the Neva River). Took part in the Third Sinyavino Operation. At the end of December 1943, it was attached to the 67th Army. The 55th Army was lead by Major-General I.G. Lazarev (until November 1941) and Lieutenant General V.P. Sviridov.
